🥭 Paw Paws: The Native “Tropical” Treasure
Add a taste of the exotic to your landscape with the Paw Paw (Asimina triloba), North America’s largest native edible fruit. Often overlooked but deeply rooted in local history, the Paw Paw is the ultimate “Principle Plant” for those looking to combine ornamental beauty with a backyard harvest.

Did You Know?
- The “Hillbilly Mango”: Despite their tropical flavor—a creamy blend of banana, mango, and pineapple—Paw Paws are incredibly hardy and native right here to our local woodlands.
- A Butterfly Essential: The Paw Paw is the exclusive host plant for the stunning Zebra Swallowtail butterfly; without these trees, we wouldn’t have these butterflies!
- Presidential Praise: Both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were known fans, with Washington famously enjoying them as his favorite chilled dessert.
Peterson Paw Paw® Licensed Grower
We are proud to be a licensed grower of Peterson Paw Paws®. Founded by renowned breeder Neal Peterson, these “named cultivars” are the gold standard of the industry. Unlike wild seedlings, which can be hit-or-miss, Peterson varieties are selected for:
- Superior Flavor & Texture: Richer, creamier, and fewer seeds.
- Fruit Size: Large, meaty fruits that make harvesting a joy.
- Proven Cultivars: We carry favorites like Shenandoah™, Susquehanna™, Rappahannock™, and Potomac™.
Availability: Trees & Fruit
- Plants Year-Round: We maintain a steady stock of container-grown Paw Paw trees throughout the year. Because they have a sensitive taproot, buying our established, nursery-grown trees ensures a much higher success rate in your garden compared to bare-root stock.
- Fresh Fruit in September: Want to try before you buy? Visit us during the month of September! We offer fresh Paw Paw fruit for sale as it ripens, allowing you to experience the unique flavor of different cultivars firsthand.
Pro Tip: Paw Paws thrive in well-drained, fertile soil and appreciate a bit of shade when they are very young, though they produce the best fruit in full sun as they mature.
Availability & Custom Orders
Because we propagate these cultivars ourselves, they are available in sizes ranging from young starter plants to mature, landscape-sized specimens. We welcome inquiries for varieties not listed here.
